Gabions today. I started by building a 32x16x4in block – the same size as the gabions on the north and east side. I unrolled the hardwire cloth and, once it was properly positioned, temporarily fastened it to the block. Then I cut the cloth and folded it over the block. I used a piece of plywood and a hammer to keep the edge as clean as possible. Then I removed the fasteners and put that half aside to start on its mate.
Chris Aldrich helped by stitching the two halves of the first gabion together. I continued shaping the metal while various people stopped by to work on stitching; Brittany, Chris, Lyle, and Melissa all took part. Once the gabions were stitched, I took some rebar ties and reinforced the center of each cage. The size worked very well with the material we bought; we got seven gabions out of one roll with very little waste.
The work took all day but we now have six gabions ready for the rock already. I think we’ll make good progress through the end of the week; the interior finish is going very quickly, the shelving is nearly done, and the gabions are coming together.
